Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis with Dr. Jennifer Cantor, PhD

For those seeking the deepest level of self-understanding, psychoanalysis offers a unique and intensive path of exploration. While not commonly sought in today's fast-paced world, this approach can provide profound insights and lasting change for individuals who are deeply motivated to understand themselves.

While many therapies focus on managing symptoms or changing behaviors, psychoanalysis helps you understand and transform the underlying patterns that create these symptoms in the first place. This often leads to more lasting and comprehensive change.

Psychoanalysis will help you to:

  • Recognize unconscious patterns that shape your relationships, choices, and emotional responses

  • Discover how early experiences influence your present-day life in unexpected ways

  • Understand why certain situations trigger intense emotional reactions

  • Identify self-imposed limitations and their origins

  • Achieve more authentic relationships with others

  • Improve access to your creativity as well as your capacity for joy and pleasure in life

  • Respond more flexibly to life's challenges.

This approach might be a good fit if you:

  • Are deeply curious about yourself and your inner world

  • Want to understand not just what you do, but why you do it

  • Are willing to commit time and energy to an intensive process of self-discovery

  • Have the flexibility in your schedule for multiple sessions per week

  • Value depth of understanding over quick solutions

  • Are interested in lasting personality change rather than just symptom relief

Psychoanalysis typically involves multiple sessions per week, a commitment to speaking freely about whatever comes to mind, an exploration of dreams, fantasies, and unconscious patterns, and the analysis of the therapeutic relationship itself as a window into other relationships.

While I bring a psychoanalytic perspective to all my work, I offer formal psychoanalysis only in select cases where it truly matches the person's needs and goals.

If you're interested in exploring whether psychoanalysis might be right for you, we can begin with a consultation to discuss your goals and determine whether this intensive approach would be the best fit for your needs.
